The History of Slabtown Walking Tour

Saturday, March 13, 2021

Tour guides Maureen Wiese and J. Michael Moore of Hampton Roads Tours will provide interesting information and insights not typically found in history books.

During the height of the Civil War, Uniontown, or Slabtown, was created on the Yorktown Battlefield. Yorktown was the other Freedom Fortress for 12,000 enslaved people seeking freedom. The town began in 1863 and ended in 1976. It provided shelter, education, and spiritual guidance to thousands of African-American citizens. We will explore the streets and empty lots of Slabtown and share photographs of the once thriving community.

Due to the evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic—all York County sponsored and partner community events are subject to postponement or cancellation. This includes changes to dates, times, and locations.
