Spring Break Staycation in Yorktown
It’s that time of year when we could all use a little pause from the work and school routine. But if you didn’t get around to booking that spring break trip to the Caribbean, don’t worry; there are countless things to do right here in Yorktown!
Day 1
Rise and shine, and head over to Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasters and Petite Café located in the circa 1726 Cole Digges House in the heart of Historic Yorktown. At this charming shop, you’ll be able to grab your brew of choice and a tasty treat to kick off your day.
After fueling up, take a trip back in time. The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown tells the story of the nation’s founding, from the twilight of the colonial period to the dawn of the Constitution and beyond. Check out a recreated Continental Army encampment, see firings of a flintlock musket, explore a Revolution-era farm, and so much more.
After a busy morning soaking up some history, hop on the free Yorktown Trolley that’ll take you to Riverwalk Landing for lunch at Carrot Tree Kitchens. Enjoy a fresh-from-scratch wrap, gourmet salad, or soup. For dessert, be sure to try their signature triple-layer carrot cake filled with decadent cream cheese frosting! If that’s not your thing, grab a cold treat at Ben & Jerry’s. With more than 30 flavors to choose from, this ice cream shop never disappoints.
Day 2
It’s time to learn some history! Spend the morning visiting tour routes and grounds of the Yorktown Battlefield, a part of Colonial National Historical Park. Check out our Events Calendar for dates and times of Park Ranger Walks and Talks.
For lunch, dine al fresco at Water Street Grille. They specialize in artisan pizzas, fresh seafood, and tapas. You’ll find 20 micro-brew beers on tap daily!
In the afternoon, stop by the York County Historical Museum to explore artifacts representing Yorktown from the time of the earliest Native Americans all the way through World War II. Then, stroll through the Gallery at York Hall on the main level to purchase a unique souvenir handcrafted by a local artist, to remind you of your staycation!
There’s lots of learning to be done after the sun goes down, too. Grab a bite at Umi Sushi, then gear up for a Yorktown Ghost Walk. You’ll find out about the history and haunts of Colonial Yorktown as told by paranormal investigators.
Day 3
Learn some history and connect with nature this morning during a guided Segway Tour. Call Patriot Tours & Provisions at 757.969.5400 or visit their website to book. Afterwards, head to their Riverwalk Landing shop to rent a bicycle, and enjoy exploring in and around the York River!
You’ll surely work up an appetite, and Yorktown Pub is a great place to relax and unwind after a fun-filled morning. You’ll find a full bar, plus sandwiches and seafood.
In the afternoon, discover something new when you shop our specialty stores for unique finds! Shop for handcrafted American-made art at Auntie M’s American Cottage; antique prints, custom hand-painted floor cloths, maps, and more at Black Dog Gallery; special exhibits and sought-after creations from hundreds of local artists at the Gallery at York Hall and On the Hill Gallery; and vintage and rare books, records, and historical items from Yorktown Bookshop. Don’t forget about your furry friends–Gangsta Dog bakes fresh, all-natural, gourmet dog biscuits; every cookie is made by hand! Lastly, be sure to treat yourself to a piece of gorgeous fine jewelry at Viccellio Goldsmith.
Day 4
The Watermen’s Museum reopens April 1! Spend the morning exploring this unique museum that will give you an understanding of the role Chesapeake Bay Watermen, from pre-colonial to modern times, have played in the shaping of our nation.
For lunch, head back up to Main Street in Historic Yorktown for lunch at Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasters and Petite Café. Whether you’re in the mood for a sandwich, salad, or soup, the options here are delicious! Enjoy the ambiance at one of their backyard picnic tables.
Hoping for a little sun and sand while on vacation? We have that covered, too! Find your favorite spot on our two-acre beachfront, open a new book, and relax along the York River in the afternoon. You never know what you’ll see out in the water–from dolphins to submarines!
Day 5
If you’re in town on a Saturday, award-winning Yorktown Market Days is a must! While you shop for homemade and handmade items from makers, bakers, farmers, and artists, the kids will enjoy children’s crafts, activities, and games at one of our special themed markets. Grab breakfast tacos from Coastal Thirst, then work up an appetite for Boyd’s Tasty Dogs when lunchtime rolls around.
Be sure to check our Events Calendar often for new happenings around town, and follow Visit Yorktown on Facebook and Instagram for special event announcements, new product alerts, fresh menu items, and more.
