Autumn in Virginia is one of the most beautiful times of year—especially in Greater Williamsburg. From Yorktown’s annual fall market to Busch Gardens’ Howl-O-Scream and Colonial Williamsburg’s carriage rides to Jamestown Settlement’s outdoor living history—some would say this is the most wonderful time of the year to visit our part of the state.
The icing on the cake? The scenic route connecting all three destinations of Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Historic Yorktown. The Colonial Parkway, a 23-mile stretch of paved river-gravel roadway, is an attraction in and of itself and is perfect for sightseeing. The road runs parallel to the James and York Rivers and was constructed to integrate the region’s natural and cultural beauty. Mostly covered in trees, it’s also the ideal route to take in the vibrant fall foliage!
From the time you pick up the Parkway in Williamsburg to the time you exit here in Yorktown is about a 20-minute drive. There are several designated stops along the way to pull over and soak in the ambiance. Once you arrive to our tip of the Historic Triangle—you’ll find even more breathtaking views and opportunities for spectacular photos and memorable outdoor adventures.
In fact, we recently shared a blog that outlines the perfect weekend getaway in Yorktown, complete with a proposed itinerary. You'll find suggestions for where to stay, where to eat, and stops around town you definitely don't want to miss while you're here. Our family-friendly community markets, museums, galleries, and restaurants show just what southern hospitality is all about.
As a tourism office, our goal is to inspire people to #visityorktown year-round. One of the easiest ways to do that is through beautiful images shot around town, especially those shared on Instagram. After all, it’s one thing to talk about how amazing everything is—it’s another to be able to show you!
From our breathtaking sunrises and sunsets to the signature sails of our home-ported tall ship to our Revolutionary roots—everywhere you turn, memories are waiting to be made (and snapped!). It’s easy to see why Yorktown is becoming a scenic destination not just for locals and tourists, but international travel writers and social media influencers alike. Here are some of our most popular Instagram posts from the past year! We're going to skip over Fall for this one - and start with a Winter Wonderland. Too soon?
