October Brings Pumpkins, Hayrides, Patriotism, and even a Halloween Pet Parade to Yorktown!
Yes, yes, yes! October has officially arrived and by the end of the week, the temperatures should finally start to align with the calendar. (That means the social media team can stop hesitating to use #itsfallyall when it’s clearly still #summervibes at Yorktown Beach.) And as the leaves start to change and the humidity prepares to exit stage left—the Tourism Office is gearing up for another autumn packed full of fun for you and your family.
Mark your calendars Hampton Roads. The final three Saturdays this month will include our Fall Festival, Yorktown Day Market, and Paws at the River. Not only is this the first year we’ve had three back-to-back themed markets in October—but we’re also launching some new and exciting activities like a Halloween Pet Costume Contest and Parade!
More than 50 vendors and artists will participate in these themed markets where you'll find seasonal fruits and vegetables; fresh poultry; farm-fresh milk and eggs; homemade breads and baked goods; nitro brew coffee and raw juices; handmade soaps and candles; pretzels; and so much more! Artists will be selling painted gourds, photos, paintings, jewelry, stained glass and personalized caricatures.

8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
First up—the Fall Festival. You could call this our kick-off to all things autumn. The entire community is invited to come down to the waterfront to celebrate everything we love about fall. Think pumpkins, mums, kettle corn, soups, caramel apples, and all your other seasonal favorites. You definitely want to bring along the kids for this one! There will be free face painting and other children’s activities including hayrides, a hay maze, inflatables, alpacas, pumpkin painting, games, and fun family photo opportunities. NEW this year - visitors of all ages are invited to guess the weight of a massive pumpkin for fun prizes donated by participating farmers market vendors and artists! Live entertainment includes a healthy chef cooking demonstration presented by Grunow’s Kitchen at 10:30 and ongoing musical performances from A Taste of Love with Jan and Bart. Get there early if you want to catch the Fifes and Drums of York Town. This talented group of kids and young adults will play at 10 a.m.
Yorktown Day Market
Saturday, October 19, 2019
8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
October 19 is an important day in America’s History. And this year, the anniversary of the Battle of Yorktown falls on a Saturday! That means the entire town will be filled with special programs and activities to help history come alive. Salute the military during the parade down Main Street, cheer for the cannons and performances on the Battlefield and interact with Revolutionary War reenactors at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. The market will have extended hours to give you more time to shop your favorite vendors, artists, and food trucks before or after the day's events. Be sure to bring your appetite because Carrot Tree will be selling Brunswick Stew and Ham Biscuits! Enjoy live entertainment from local favorite Phil Poteat as well as another special performance by the Fifes and Drums of York Town at 10 a.m. Click here for the full list of Yorktown Day events.
Paws at the River
Saturday, October 26, 2019
9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Say goodbye to the Dog Days of Summer and hello to the Dog Days of Fall! While Yorktown Market Days is pet-friendly all year, Paws at the River is an annual tradition that helps to raise awareness about local animal rescue groups and organizations. You are encouraged to bring your pup with you while you shop! Be sure to stop by FiDough Homemade Dog Treats where Teresa will be passing out limited free samples (with products available for purchase), get a professional picture or caricature with your canine companion, and march in Yorktown’s first-ever Halloween Pet Parade. You can dress up, too! The parade starts promptly at 10 a.m. with participants asked to gather near the Freight Shed. Prizes will be awarded to the most creative costumes. Robbie Kerns and Clayton Ware will also provide acoustical rock and blues for the day.
We know parking for these events can be tricky. It's important to note that Yorktown offers FREE PARKING. There are several lots located throughout Historic Yorktown, with the most coveted (and quickly snagged) spots inside the two-level parking terrace on Water Street. We suggest you consider parking on the outskirts of town, up at the Courthouse or County Admin Building, and then riding the free Yorktown trolley down the hill. The Trolley runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Yorktown Market Days is always rain or shine. The vendors and artists will move into the lower level of the parking terrace in the case of inclement weather. The extra activities, however, may be canceled and will not be rescheduled. Don't worry. We'll announce it before you get there. Just make sure you're following us on Facebook at Visit Yorktown’s. That's where we'll post all event-related changes and announcements every Saturday morning.
Special thanks to TSP Lawns & Landscapes and Yorktown Feed Seed ‘N More for generously donating labor and materials for this year’s hay maze!
Also, a round of applause to our amazing 2019 Revolutionary sponsors: Farm Bureau Insurance and Langley Federal Credit Union.
Chef Demonstrations are sponsored by State Farm Agent Mark Irwin, weekly entertainment by Amory Funeral Home, and select children’s activities by Parks Orthodontics.
Yorktown Market Days and its activities are presented by York County and the Riverwalk Landing Business Association.
